A resident of Omkar Rd in Narere is calling for the assistance of local government authorities to clear rubbish that has gone uncollected for months.
Sakiusa Waqa said while some residents in the River Road area were to be blamed for dumping their household garbage by the side of the road, the town council was equally responsible for its failure in collecting the garbage on time.
“The key issue is the garbage collectors need to come at the scheduled time to remove the rubbish. When they don’t come, it accumulates and things get worse when the dogs get to the rubbish and scatter it all across the road,” he said.
Mr Waqa said all kinds of rubbish had accumulated on the side of the road for months.
“These old, rotting cars and parts, furniture and household appliances – they’ve been there for many months. Usually the truck comes and collects once every two weeks but it’s almost been a month and there’s been no collection done.”
A member of the River Rd crime committee, Mr Waqa said they had also asked the council for a residential waste bin however, they had not heard back on the request.
“The council came and told us to collect all the rubbish disposed on the sides of the road so we got together and cleaned the place and brought all the rubbish from where it was right up to the road to make it easier to collect.”
Mr Waqa said they would raise their concerns about the uncollected rubbish at a meeting this Friday.
