Oceania champion Papua New Guinea had to pull out of their last pool match at the Pacific Four Nations tournament.
According to a statement by Football Australia they had been informed by the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) that their senior national women’s team was unable to field a team for the final fixture against the Young Matildas.
PNGFA advised Football Australia they have diagnosed six players as unfit to play for medical reasons, meaning Papua New Guinea was unable to field a squad for yesterday’s match against the CommBank Young Matildas on Sunday 13 November.
Football Australia said it understood the advised position and wished the players a speedy recovery as well as thanked the PNGFA for their ongoing involvement in the competition.
In lieu of the scheduled fixture, the CommBank Young Matildas played against themselves in an elite match. Seven additional Australian players were brought into the squad for this to happen.
