Investigators have begun into what is believed to be the drowning of a one-year-old girl in Koroboya, Ba over the weekend.
Divisional Police Commander West Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa said the toddler was found by a relative floating in the Koroboya River a few metres from their home.
SSP Vaisewa said the victim was rushed to the Ba Aspen Hospital where she was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.
The drowning of the child reiterated the call of authorities for parents and guardians to be more vigilant.
“Parents and guardians are again reminded to be vigilant in monitoring their children’s movements,” a police statement said.
“This is yet another unfortunate accident which could have been avoided.
“Please ensure the strict supervision of children and be alert to the potential drowning hazards in and around your homes.”
The national drowning death toll currently stands at 36 compared with 40 for the same period last year.
