Caught in a crisis | Tension grows in New Caledonia, Fijians in crossfire

As tension continues to grow in New Caledonia where as many as 100 Fijians are located, regional groups and activists are calling on French President Emannuel Macron to withdraw its proposed Constitutional changes.

The Pacific Regional non-governmental organisations which has the support of groups like the Fiji Council of Social Services and the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre said the proposed changes could threaten a “30 year period of relative peace”.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has said talks were in progress to evacuate Fiji citizens.

Fijian national Dravi Damutoro, who has been separated from her family since arriving for Mother’s Day celebrations in Navua, says she hopes the rescue plans will reunite her with her family soon.
