STUDENTS of Nadi Airport Primary School held a one-day election earlier this month to pick who should lead them over the next 10 months.
Yesterday, Year Eight students Asenaca Cikavu and Viliame Temo were announced head girl and head boy of the school after campaigning for two weeks before the elections. Deputy head boy Callaghan Fox and deputy head girl Asenaca Bakaniceva were also handed the positions after being voted in by their fellow students.
At the school’s badging ceremony, Education Minister Dr Mahendra Reddy praised the students for exercising and implementing their democratic rights at a young age.
He said the school had made history by allowing students between Year Five and Year Eight to vote for their prefects.
He said taking part in the child’s education was important to ensuring a secure and bright future for the child and their community.
“In this journey to educating our children and, therefore, educating future Fiji, we need to play our respective roles, especially the parents,” Dr Reddy said.
