TWO men from Sigatoka on alleged drug charges have been instructed to submit their alleged police brutality claims to the Fiji Human Rights Commission.
While appearing at the Sigatoka Magistrates Court earlier this week, Alipate Sauradu and Josevata Navuailau made the claims to the court about how they were allegedly assaulted by police after their arrest on June 23.
Mr Sauradu and Mr Navuailau are each charged with one count of cultivation of illegal drugs.
The pair were arrested during Operation Cavuraka on suspicion of cultivating marijuana in the highlands of Navosa.
Mr Sauradu and Mr Navuailau claimed they were allegedly assaulted by arresting police officers at the Keiyasi Police Post after they had voluntarily gone to the police station.
They also claimed they were allegedly assaulted on a few occasions while in police custody.
The pair’s defence lawyer Faizal Koya had also submitted a medical report of the two men.
Mr Koya will assist the pair in submitting their claims of police brutality to the Fiji Human Rights Commission.
In the meantime, the two men have been granted bail under strict conditions.
The duo will reappear on September 12 for their plea to be taken.
