Authority installs weigh bridges

TWENTY-seven drivers were booked in Nadi for overloading their vehicles after the Land Transport Authority installed two portable weigh bridges in the Jet Set town.

Acting LTA chief executive officer Aptinko Vaurasi said Nadi was included in LTA’s operation to curb overloading of vehicles across the country.

“There are numerous developments in Nadi which means heavy equipment,” Mr Vaurasi said.

“It is important that we remind everyone who is operating a truck to keep to the weight limits.

“Our efforts are showing success. Working in collaboration with Government, the Fiji Roads Authority and trucking companies, we have now increased the compliance level from 80 per cent to close to 90 per cent.”

He said the campaign would continue because it was essential that roads and bridges were protected. Overloaded vehicles were causing serious damage to the public infrastructures.

According to the LTA, two round-the-clock weighbridges have been stationed in Lami and Lautoka while a third has been set up near the LTA headquarters in Valelevu. The two portable weigh bridges in Nadi are part of the three that operate at no set times on Vanua Levu and Viti Levu.
