A GROUP of Legalega residents in Nadi are upset about high water bill charges they have received over the past nine months.
The residents from Savunawai Housing and Ledrusasa squatter settlement claim they have been slapped with water bills that did not justify their water usage. Group spokesman Prem Kumar said water supply to the area was not consistent.
“Our water supply can come only two to three hours a day before it shuts off again,” he said.
“When water comes, sometimes it’s dirty or the pressure is too low that only one or two taps in the house will have water.
“We have to fill our buckets and water bottles and that’s all we have for the day.”
“How can a household using only two to three hours of water supply be paying a bill of more than $400, $700 and even $1000?”
He said many complaints had been registered with the Water Authority of Fiji and relevant authorities. “We refuse to pay the water bill because it does not make sense.”
When approached, Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar said she would need more information about the issue.
“The best I can do is take it with the relevant ministries and the Consumer Council of Fiji,” she said.
Copies of the water bills and queries on the issue were sent to WAF and the Minister for Infrastructure, Jone Usamate, but no response was received when this edition went to press.
