A new night food market is expected to be constructed for night sellers at the Sugar City.
Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar explained the Lautoka City Council had noted an increase of food sellers at night which prompted the ministry to build new stalls.
She said this new project was discussed with stakeholders during a recent visit to the Western Division last week.
“Another area of discussion was to do with the COVID-19 and how our cities are preparing with the influx of people particularly micro-businesses that are looking for opportunities to start some of business for their livelihood,” she said.
“In that regard, the municipal councils, like for example the Nadi Town Council, have set up some flea markets and Lautoka has also given options.
“They are working on the Namoli green and they want to develop that area into a night food market.”
She said the structure used by the sellers was not suitable for the small micro-entrepreneurs.
“So currently, there are two tents being used by women who are selling their food items but later on, they will be developed into a much better facility for them to sell their food at night.
“It is a good location because it is between the bus station and the mini-van stand so foot traffic will be much bigger.”
