It was mayhem at the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday when a man charged for one count of aggravated robbery jumped off the two-storey building.

The man was alleged to have attempted suicide after he was informed he would be further remanded in custody.

Police officers and government officials rushed to assist him after he sustained serious head injuries in the fall.

A team from this newspaper was present in court when the incident occurred.

The accused had been bailed on minor charges in a separate case and was out on bail, but had to be brought back to the remand centre for the aggravated robbery matter.

This issue was brought up by magistrate Nayani Kasturiratne who reprimanded the man’s counsel from the Legal Aid Commission for trying to mislead the court.

The Legal Aid officer agreed that there was an error and that they would make a fresh application for this client.

Upon realising this, the accused jumped off the building after departing from the courtroom.

An investigation into the incident has begun.
