Transport Minister Faiyaz Koya paid tribute to Fijians in the maritime sector for their tireless efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While speaking at the World Maritime Day celebration at the Port Denarau Marina yesterday, he said maritime transport had become a vital lifeline for many countries, including Fiji.
“The pandemic highlighted the professionalism and sacrifice of the two million global seafarers, who served the world by delivering vital medical supplies, food and other basic goods,” he said.
“Despite the numerous humanitarian crisis encountered by seafarers, the overall resilience of the shipping industry during this pandemic has greatly been recognised globally.”
Mr Koya said World Maritime Day provided an opportunity to raise awareness on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and how the International Maritime Organization and its members, including Fiji, were working to achieve the SDG targets.
Pacific Community (SPC) deputy director-general Dr Audrey Aumua said maritime transport was a critical sector in the region especially where maritime shipping was the only form of transportation for much of the Pacific populations.
“So there is a deep reliance on shipping and a reliance that ensures us that this sector continues to support ongoing livelihoods,” she said.
