Quick action prevents fire

Quick action by staff members of Travel Well Fiji in Momi, Sigatoka, prevented a major fire from destroying the tourism property in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Travel Well Fiji program manager Leba Digitaki said the fire started about 5am in the hotel’s main activity building.

“By the time we found the fire, most of the building was on fire,” she said.

“Our main concern was to make sure that it did not spread to other buildings nearby so we made sure to contain it.”

She said because of the resort’s location, it took a while for authorities to respond to their call.

“While we waited, we did our best to contain it.

“Most of us had fire extinguishers which helped us prevent the spread.”

Most of the hotel staff members have been at home since earlier this year when international borders were shut down.

“We have staff on site but mainly for maintenance and security purposes.

“We were very lucky to have more than four people on site to help with putting out the fire.”

According to the National Fire Authority, an official investigation into the cause of the fire had begun.

Fire officers from the Nadi and Sigatoka fire stations responded to the emergency call.
