COVID-19: Yasana o Ba members on Twitter organise food drive for remote Abaca Village

A group of Yasana o Ba members on social media platform Twitter have come together to organise a food drive for Abaca village in the highlands of Lautoka.

The social media campaign is geared towards assisting 30 households.

One of the original members Alfred Antonio said the whole idea was borne out of a virtual gathering between Yasana o Ba Twitter users.

“Mererai (Vatege) and I started the group just as a way to bring together all of the Yasana o Ba Twitter users and for everyone to get to know each other and not long after the idea to help the communities within our province was brought up,” he said.

“Now we have about 66 members including those that are overseas. We have members in Australia, and in the United States that are very much involved in our campaign.

“So to help with our campaign, we approached the Ba Provincial Council and they provided us with three communities within the Nadi and Lautoka containment areas that really needed assistance.

“We decided to go with Abaca because of its location and by the time we had started this campaign, it had been over a month into their containment.

He said since the launch of the campaign on April 27, the group has been able to raise enough for each household.

“Our target was $3000 and within 72 hours, our group managed to surpass that target.

“We are very grateful to everyone that has extended a helping hand to this great cause.

“We are also grateful to the Ba Provincial Council office for assisting us with this.

“For the Yaluve ni Yasana o Ba Twitter International group, we hope that this is the start of other food drives.”

The campaign ends on Thursday.
