Chinese drug suspects on tourist visas

TWO Chinese nationals arrested and charged with drug possession were allegedly found with 805.657 grams of methamphetamine kept in 20 zip lock bags.

They were caught at an air bed and breakfast in Martintar, Nadi, on Tuesday, and had entered the country on tourist visas.

Before Magistrate Semi Babitu in the Nadi Magistrate’s Court yesterday were Xu Qian, 38, and Wang An, 38, each charged with one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs.

Their lawyer Rajshneel Chand of Ace Legal said his clients did not speak any English and needed a Chinese translator before any proceedings could begin.

He said a translator had assisted police investigators during his clients caution interview.

In response, Magistrate Babitu said the court would need to find its own translator.

Mr Babitu allowed a request from Mr Chand that the pair be kept in police custody.

The prosecution has confirmed that submissions would be made to transfer the case to the High Court, adding it is a Category 4 offence which carries a prison term of 15 to 20-year jail terms.

The case has been adjourned to September 29.
