Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has labelled the 12,000 non-communicable disease deaths in two years “a crisis”.
During the Waka Sports Day event in Wakanisila, Kalabu, last weekend, he said NCDs were no longer just a health issue.
“This is a whole of society issue,” the PM said.
“Unhealthy food and too much sugar; a lack of exercise; tobacco use; excessive alcohol and stress are killing thousands of Fijians before their time.”
Mr Bainimarama told the Wakanisila parents that their presence at the walk served as an excellent example to their children.
“To have an inter-faith initiative that unites youths, parents, kids and grandparents in tackling the most pressing social issues in the community, this is a catalyst for real change.
“I am pleased to share that there are several more walks like this being organised in the coming months, across Fiji.
“I invite the private sector, faith-based organisations, civil society, youth groups and others to join in and create opportunities of their own as well.
“No more excuses, Fiji. Let’s end this cycle of sickness and early deaths, for ourselves and our children.”
The Waka Sports Day was part of neighbourhood effort in Wakanisila to reduce the high rate of NCDs, as well as spotlight crime prevention in the area.
