Investigate FBC board – Chaudhry

Fiji Labour Party leader and former prime minister Mahendra Chaudhry is calling on Government to investigate the former Fijian Broadcasting Corporation board for failing in their fiduciary duty in not ensuring FBC was operating diligently.

He said this while responding to a statement released by FBC board chairman Ajay Bhai Amrit of an investigation to look into the spending of the PSB (public service broadcast) fee or grant from the government to FBC.

Mr Amrit said the total PSB paid since Mr Sayed-Khaiyum took over as CEO in 2008 was $93,782,811.45.

“A thorough investigation must be made and appropriate action must be taken against the CEO and the board,” Mr Chaudhry said.

“The board must not have allowed that spending. They are just as responsible.

“As members of the board, it was their duty and responsibility to ensure that the corporation was operating diligently.

“I think they failed to ensure that the affairs of the corporation were done properly.

“The board must also be held responsible for what we see as super salaries and expenditure in the TV and radio station.”

Mr Chaudhry said FBC was also not producing its annual reports.

“They were not even producing their annual reports and should also be investigated on failing to discharge their responsibilities and duties properly,” he said.
