Residents claim poor drainage cause of flooding after rainfall

Residents of Wainibuku Rd, Nakasi, claim drainage issues in their area contribute to flooding during heavy rainfall.

Concerned resident Lice Nakalevu said the problem had been ongoing for the past 30 years.

The area behind Ms Nakalevu’s house was flooded when a team from this newspaper visited her house recently.

She said the problem was getting worse.

“When there is heavy rain, the water comes right up to my house,” said Ms Nakalevu.

“It is just because of the drainage.

A culvert a few metres in front at Wainunu gets blocked and because of that, the area behind my house gets flooded during heavy rain.”

Ms Nakalevu said their backyard garden crops also got damaged in the process.

“Because of rubbish clogging up the drain, our crops get damaged.

“We don’t eat the dalo planted there, we just use the rourou.

“The rubbish from the upper area gets piled up here and all this blocks the drain.” Ms Nakalevu has called on authorities to look into their plight and assist in resolving the problem.
