A former FijiFirst candidate believes the proposed establishment of the medicinal cannabis industry could wipe out the country’s debt.
Meleti Raimuria, who stood for FijiFirst in the 2022 General Election, said he supported plans to set up a medicinal cannabis industry here.
Speaking at a consultation on medicinal in Savuvasavu, Mr Raimuria said the industry would help the economy and eradicate poverty.
“I was asked while campaigning during the last election in regards to the legalisation of marijuana in the country,” Mr Raimuria said.
“I would say, yes. Now we have it, I wasn’t going to lie to the people. This idea was mooted by the FijiFirst government.
“Not only would it address poverty, but it would also improve livelihoods and provide employment. It’s important for us to look at this at the biggest scope.”
Mr Raimuria said this also meant more money for the Government, thus more assistance.
“At the moment, the Government cannot provide the assistance we’re asking for because it doesn’t have the money.
“With the medicinal cannabis industry setting up in Fiji, the Government will be able to provide the tractors and other assistance we require.”
Mr Raimuria added the proposal was a way forward for the country.
