CEO: Urgent need to replace tunics

National Fire Authority CEO Puamau Sowane was astounded to see tunics at the Labasa Fire Station showing signs of wear and tear.

After an inspection, Mr Sowane told the firefighters there was an immediate need to replace their tunics.

“I have identified some of them,” he said.

While stressing the need to maintain the tunics in good condition, Mr Sowane said some firefighters kept their tunics in their lockers and this was unacceptable.

“While attending to fires, you may encounter various types of fumes, which can contaminate your tunics,” he said.

“This unknown material can contaminate your uniform if you are not careful.”

In addition, he said this was not the only thing he saw that needed to be changed.

“Some firefighters were wearing worn out ties during parades,” Mr Sowane said, adding some firefighters were storing wet towels in their lockers. Sun out your wet towels,” he said.

He said keeping wet towels in their locker room could contribute to mildew and damage their uniforms.
