The Fire rugby team’s remarkable win at the Fiji Bitter Tabadamu 7s men’s cup final was a tribute to the late former Flying Fijians player Jale Sassen, who was recently laid to rest.
The team showcased its strength by defeating the Police Blue 15-5 with the Nahehevia 7s champs dominating the first half with a 10-0 lead.
Despite a late try by Police Blue in the second half, Fire secured the victory with a final try to make it 15-5.
Coach Akuila Nasi commended the team for proving themselves against a challenging Police side that included former and current national 7s players.
The win was dedicated to Sassen, honouring his memory and contributions to rugby. Nasi praised the players for their hard work and determination leading up to the final, emphasising their fighting spirit.
“We first dedicate this win to Jale Sassen who we laid to rest this week, amazing person great rugby player, this win is for him,” said Nasi.
“The boys really worked hard for this, we had been looking forward for this final against Police. The boys showed a lot of fighting spirit and determination. Thanks to God also for this win.”
The team aims to address weaknesses and prepare for the Fiji Bitter Marist 7s, the final leg of the Fiji Bitter Series, with the goal of securing their third win. Nasi expressed gratitude to supporters, fans, and firefighters for their unwavering support.
