FOR Agnes Teupola Seniteteva Shute, grocery shopping is about more than simply filling the pantry.
It is a way of ensuring her family enjoys healthy meals while managing household expenses wisely.
Originally from Tubou, Lakeba, Lau, Agnes was raised in Waibau, Sawani, Naitasiri and Vusuya, Kuku in Nausori.
The 52-year-old now lives at Tacirua East New Subdivision with her husband and their three children.
A regular shopper at NewWorld IGA in Suva, Agnes values the supermarket’s convenient location near her workplace and its consistent supply of fresh local produce.
She shops every two weeks and budgets between $300 and $350 for groceries.
Healthy eating is a priority for the family. Their meals often include Crest chicken, fresh seafood such as yellowfin tuna, barracuda, wahoo and swordfish, as well as local favourites like nama and lumi.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are staples in their household, while red meat is rarely consumed.
To cope with rising living costs and fuel prices, Agnes has adopted practical measures to save money.
She often walks to the Suva Market during lunch breaks or after work to buy fresh produce and shares transport with her daughter, who also works in Suva.
Agnes also relies on produce from the family’s farm in Waibau, where coconuts, rourou, plantains and bananas are grown.
Her advice to fellow shoppers is simple, plan ahead, buy only what you need, and bring reusable shopping bags.
For Agnes, smart shopping is the key to maintaining a healthy and sustainable family lifestyle.
