Community service option

Justice Minister Siromi Turaga has expressed strong support for implementing community service as an alternative to incarceration, particularly in addressing social issues such as littering.

In an interview with this newspaper, Mr Turaga emphasised the need for innovative reforms in policy to tackle these challenges.

By encouraging offenders to participate in community service, Mr Turaga believes both the individuals and the community can benefit.

“I strongly support community work,” Mr Turaga said.

“It does not mean people have to go to jail.

“Yes, there should be a self-realisation of attitudes because at the end of the day, it’s the attitudinal change.”

Mr Turaga said community work could play a significant role in rehabilitating offenders and benefiting society.

He said offenders should undergo education and self-realisation regarding their attitudes and actions. He urged collaboration between the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Local Government and Environment to develop effective policies that promote community service.

“They will need to push it and come up with policies.

“This in principle rests with those two ministries.”

Mr Turaga’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about reforming the justice system to focus on rehabilitation rather than solely punitive measures.

Further developments on this initiative are expected as the relevant ministries work on formulating policies to implement these ideas effectively.
