Speaker encourages women to enter politics

MORE women should be encouraged to engage and participate in politics and strive for Parliament representation, says Speaker of Parliament Dr Jiko Luveni.

Speaking to more than 200 delegates at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) 2016 annual scientific meeting in Australia yesterday, Dr Luveni highlighted the message of stronger women for a stronger society.

“Women have the multiplying skills that they learn and they need to expand to build a stronger society,” Dr Luveni said.

“The United Nations has recognised the importance of empowering women under the Sustainable Development Goals and stronger women can make a difference in the development process of any nation.

“One must be bold enough to challenge the status quo.”

Dr Luveni was addressing specialists, trainees and medical professionals from across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific.

“To address gender issues, there is a need to increase women representation in Parliament so that women can have a say in the policies and laws of any country.”

The meeting ends tomorrow.
