Kids gear up for round two of grommet series

COMPETITORS are training hard for Round 2 of the Rip Curl Micro Grommet series at Swimming Pools on Saturday.

The interest in current surfing points standings is heating up with most competitors focusing on improving their points and standing for the top three positions.

In the under-14 boys John Vasea is leading with 32.8 points, Ulaiasi Tukana 30.4, Samuela Rawaqa 28.5 and Thomas Steele on 25.6. The U14 girls sees Kiesha Wakeham on 35.5, her sister Kayla on 30, Linieta Raluni on 22.5 and Filomena Vakarusabai on 18.5.

The U12 boys is close with Samuela Navuso on 34.7, Brandon Koroi 31.5, Saimoni Vakarusabai 29.5 and Josefa Kali on 26.7. Girls U12 sees Kiesha Wakeham out in from with 32.9, Doris Rounds on 25.9, Troika Tinounimidra 20 and Michelle Balenasiga 19

Fiji Surfing Association head coach Ian Portingale said some good scores saw U10 boys with Kalama McKellar on 33.6, Julius Campbelll on 31.5, Kini Labalaba 26 and James Kusitino 17.3. The girls also showed plenty of style with Kiesha Wakeham on 38.7, Ulukilupete’a Kurop on 34.1, sister Havana on 28.2 and Alena Chong Sue on 22.2

“On Saturday there will be an opening ceremony at Nabila Village at 8am with competition starting around 9am at Swimming Pools Then at around 1.30pm there will be a presentation naming the winners and a closing ceremony back at Nabila Village,” he said.

The series is designed to offer a new experience for younger boys and girls surfers (grommets) to get more involved in surfing. There are 56 confirmed participants, half of them girls.
