Fijian rugby success

I MIGHT be speaking too high of them but my instincts tell me that since John O’Connor and Francis Kean have taken control over the affairs of FRU, we have slightly moved away from the grounds of failure to be seen climbing the mountains of success.

Their leadership and good governance have proved the difference as rugby continues to make headlines and attract media publicity. Both Mr O’Connor and Mr Kean were instrumental in ensuring that FRU became more accountable and transparent.

The success of our 15s team finishing the year ranked 10th in the world, the rise of the Fijiana in 7s and 15s and the victory in Rio are positive indicators of the efforts put in at the Rugby House in terms of development.

How could I not mention the visionary leadership of the president of FRU, our Honourable PM, who has successfully negotiated a Test match against Australia and re-ignited the fact that we would host Super Rugby matches here at home.

A large part of Fiji’s population follow Super Rugby matches as we have our Fijian boys playing for the various franchises.

Now I hear that FRU, in partnership with Vodafone, is organising its awards night on December 16 to award rugby players and coaches for their performance and contribution.

Fans could also text and vote for their favourite player. Just makes it super interesting! FBC has also partnered to bring the awards night live as they claim to reach the most number of people.

I am in favour of the awards night being televised live and it is my humble plea to FRU to please invite Ben Ryan to be the chief guest.

It would be the best way to say thank you to the ever humble man who guided us to our first Olympics gold medal.

In addition, I acknowledge the financial support of all the sponsors who have made the FRU awards night possible.

By the way, we are all looking forward to the movie Sevens from Heaven, which I am confident would bring tears of joy to Fijians all over the world.

Imagine the mileage Fiji would get and the trickle down effect towards our economy as the documentary features our Olympics preparation and effects of STC Winston.

A big vinaka vakalevu to Sevens from Heaven director Bruce Southwick for the documentary.
