VODAFONE Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber, who is expected to be in the country before the Wellington 7s next month, is looking at ways to best continue to develop the form that the Fiji 7s team are in.

After the first leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai and Cape Town, Baber knows what to expect when he joins the Fiji 7s team and prepare for the second leg of the series in Wellington and Sydney next month where Fiji has now being pooled with South Africa, Australia and Japan but one of his priorities would be his relationship with the players.

“With a backdrop of the immediate needs in terms of preparation for the second leg of the world series and my longer term plans for the program, I will have a lot on my plate come January,” Baber said.

He said it would be vital to have a plan and sticking to it especially in “the pressurised world of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

“It would be presumptuous of me to think that I can walk into the role and immediately look for change. The team has been successful for a reason and my initial thoughts will be as to how I can best continue to develop that form.

“A big part of that is going to be my relationships with the players and staff. Ultimately it will be our work and plans that will produce sustainable success.”

Baber, who was informed of his new appointment in October, understands the challenge he has got himself into but humbled and privileged at the same time, he said.

“I am fully aware of how good this group of players are to be Olympics and world series holders. My challenge is to ensure that this continues and I know that it will take all of my hard work and drive to ensure that happens not just now but for the future of Fiji rugby.”
