The Fiji Rugby Union launched a four-year strategic plan in Korovou.

While I applaud the decision made by FRU, I will eagerly await the implementation.

On the other hand, I consider this a smart move as FRU is embracing professionalism. Gone are the days of lurking in the depths of amateurism as FRU has a well-renowned brand, the Olympics gold medal plus the enormous contributions our players have made to the growth of the game internationally.

This had been a major shortfall at FRU. Thank you to the team at FRU and to the provincial unions for mapping a way forward to develop rugby.

Now that the strategic plan has been launched, FRU needs the support of sponsors, provincial unions, coaches, players, referees and the public.

It is also imperative that FRU adopt policies that are transparent and accountable if they have to gain everyone’s trust. I was impressed with the goal areas, including the implementation of a robust financial statement, increased level of commercial income, development of financial policies, procedures, player welfare, world-class domestic competition and engaging women. This is bound to keep Fijian rugby at the top of the pack.

Definitely the way forward as we count days to the 2017 RWC 7s, 2018 RWC Women’s 7s, 2019 RWC 15s and 2020 Olympics.

The strategic plan will ensure the viability of FRU in outlining a bold way forward for the sport and laying down a solid foundation for future growth and development and the fact that Fiji should capitalise on its enviable position as a premier rugby nation. Well done FRU!
