FORMER New Zealand 7s captain Karl Te Nana believes Fiji has a good chance of repeating the winning performance it displayed in Hong Kong last week in the Singapore 7s this weekend.

He said Fiji’s magnificent display at Hong Kong put the side as one of the hot favourites to win this weekend.

Te Nana is amazed with the different game patterns used by the Fijian playmakers, Jerry Tuwai and Waisea Nacuqu which helped the Vodafone-sponsored islanders to retain the Hong Kong title for the third successive year.

He said Fiji was unpredictable because the two playmakers brought two different styles which made it hard for teams to counter them.

“Fiji came back superbly in Hong Kong and will be a tough team to beat,” said Te Nana.

“The players have gained the much needed confidence they have been waiting for as showcased in Hong Kong.

“Also they have wonderful playmakers who have different types of games which is tough to defend against.

“Tuwai first comes in with his own brand of rugby, then in comes Nacuqu in the second spell or vice-versa.”

He said the Fijians had made few changes to their team and was interested to watch few new talents on display in Singapore.

“Having three new players will give Fiji the boost to play well.”

Te Nana said other teams such as New Zealand, South Africa and England, also had good chances.

“It will be exciting this year like last year where Kenya upset everyone and won their first ever tournament.

“South Africa will bounce back and New Zealand has been progressing well.”

Meanwhile, replacements Josua Vici, Lemeki Tulele and Paula Dranisinukula blended in well with the rest of the players during the team’s training run in Singapore yesterday.

The trio replaced injured Apisai Domolailai, Vatemo Ravouvou and Joeli Lutumailagi. They returned home yesterday.

Fiji is pooled with Canada, Hong Kong and Russia.
