Congratulations to The Fiji Times on its 148th anniversary. It is my pleasure to introduce to you the team that makes it all happen from a production point of view. Firstly prepress, consists of graphic artists and proof readers. This is where ads makeup, layout, colour and photo adjustments are done. Work concludes after plates are ready for the printers.

The engineers section consists of a chief engineer and two assistants who look after the daily maintenance of our press and other machineries.

The Goss section consists of eight printers and a night supervisor who looks after the print schedule for the night and assures paper is out on time.

Lastly we have a maintenance section comprising a supervisor and three assistants who tend to repairs, cleaning of the press halls and other general works that need to be done.

Over the years production has had upgrades to machinery. Plate-making has now been replaced by CTP (Computer to Plate) machines that produce printing plate directly from computer-generated page-layout information, bypassing the film stripping step entirely.

CTP eliminates the cost and management of film and its related processing chemistry which saves money, speeds up work and benefiting to the environment.

Another area of upgrade was our press machines. Since 2014 we have replaced four mono units with two four-high towers that provided more consecutive colour pages and reduces the number of print runs to accommodate the number of colour pages requested.

Having the right people with the right skills in each section is very important to our team.
