IN a bid to instill civic pride, improve waste management and develop a culture of environment sustainability, the Coral Coast Chapter of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association has proposed an environmental campaign christened “No Plastic — That’s Fantastic”.
And association chairman and general manager of Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Spa, Peter Hopgood, said $1000 will be awarded to the Nadroga-Navosa village judged the cleanest during the campaign.
“We are aware the government of Fiji is committed to cleaning up our environment and the resorts on the Coral Coast would like to be part of this initiative,” he said.
A meeting was held at the Outrigger Fiji last week where the proposal was further discussed with representatives from the Education Ministry and other Government departments.
“Our plan is to reach out to over 16,000 students in over 168 schools in the Nadroga/Navosa region.”
Among the proposals are $1000 in prizemoney for the cleanest village, $1000 for the cleanest school, $100 prizes for the winners of a poster competition for students, distribution of reusable green shopping bags to all students in the province and the staging of a Coral Coast clean-up on Fiji Day.
Discussions were also held on a proposed refund scheme for plastic drink bottles and incentives to the tourism industry for solar power.
