PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says Fiji will have key priorities at COP23 ranging from sharing the benefits of action with the marginalised, showcasing best practices for transformative climate change actions and enhanced ambition.

Mr Bainimarama made the comments on Tuesday as he updated world leaders and the UNFCCC in New York on progress being made towards COP23.

He said they would facilitate dialogues and build a grand coalition for action as the first aspect of showcasing best practice for climate change action.

“First, we will design facilitative dialogues in the spirit of talanoa which in the Pacific context means sharing of ideas to resolve problems and build and maintain relationships,” he said.

“We welcome our close partnership with the Government of Morocco and look forward to successful leadership with Poland.

“Secondly, we are helping to build and mobilise a grand coalition of climate action leadership at every level of Government, the private sector, civil society and ordinary citizens around the globe.

“These two facilities will help showcase and share proven and emerging best practices for a transformative action towards the Paris 1.5 degrees Celsius goal.”

“Because it will extend our knowledge of what is possible. This would spur nations to adopt more ambitious NDCs after 2018.”

Mr Bainimarama also said they looked forward to use the successful outcomes of COP23 ahead of Poland’s COP24.

“Of course we look to push the parties at COP23 towards adopting tax or steps in a draft form that clearly show the way to agreement on a package of decisions in 2018 and the structure of guidelines.

“And ensuring the benefits of action are shared with those who traditionally relatively marginalised. By this we intend to adopt the first gender action plan and operationalise the gender and local communities and indigenous people’s platform.”

COP23, the UN meeting on climate change, will be held in Bonn, Germany in November.
