I had a good laugh the other day after witnessing a rather odd drama in Tavua.
Since the village of Tavualevu is just over the street, ordinary town dwellers here are accustomed to seeing normal village happenings from our very own town landowners.
I saw these two boys about the age of nine or 10 pounding grog with a massive tabili.
Gauging their body language, I could feel their struggle.
The one who was having his turn was lifting and striking the kava with a loud strange voice while the other boy was still trying to hold his breath meaning he was still recovering from the hectic ordeal.
What made me laugh was the unmistakable thought of the expecting old boys back in the village waiting for their undeserved treat.
If I was one of the boys I would have gone straight to the market to pocket some of my billiard placing from this grog sales.
Educated people say this is sheer child labour, big boys in the village call this normal chores but I say this is “vakatikati”!
