Now that the pool games have ended, four giants in the premier and senior division have cemented their place in the semi-final. As predicted by soccer pundits, western giants Ba and hosts Lautoka topped their pools.
While Ba was impressive, Lautoka with all the big names have yet to jell and find their rhythm. Ba had an easy win against the Babasiga Lions but found the Delta Tigers tough customers.
In their last pool match the Men in Black were caught by surprise by Dreketi’s performance and had to settle for a draw. Lautoka started well on day 1 against Suva with a comfortable win but the gold mining town team led by soccer brains Master Saroj and former Labasa mentor Anand Sami took them to the wire.
Tavua deserve a round of applause for their sterling and rock solid performance after being promoted into the top flight after a lapse of four years.
Their performance was much better than some star-studded sides that entered this year’s Courts IDC.
If Tavua can retain their players and get a timely financial boost, this side is capable of toppling some big names. The Dreketi soccer team did well despite being thrashed by Rewa.
The northerners showed no soft approach against their neighbours from the North and held them to a draw. In their final match Dreketi held Ba to a draw. Well done Dreketi and Tavua!
Suva and Rewa also made the top 4. Suva was merciless against Tavua and Nadi netting six goals.
The Delta Tigers have been the best team when it comes to local tournaments as the red brigade has won the FACT and BOG. Churchill Park has proven to be a happy hunting ground for the Tigers.
The clash of the giants will be mouth-watering and fans are in for a soccer feast. Barring any upset, I am predicting a Ba vs Rewa final.
In the senior division the Kaminieli coached Nadroga side has shown that it is capable of winning after topping its pool and will face Tailevu Naitasiri, who bounced back from an earlier loss in pool play. Savusavu is the tournament underdog while Navua is slowly building up after winning the Holy Grail during the days of Anil Sharma.
I am predicting a Nadroga versus Navua final. My best wishes to the officials, players and fans. Finally, a big vinaka vakalevu to the Lions for their efforts!
