WELL-TRAINED and skilled workers in biosecurity will result in a skilled workforce and better understanding of the risks involved in pre-border, border, and post-border activities.
Biosecurity Authority of Fiji executive chairman Xavier Riyaz Khan made the statement in honour of staff member Ashika Prasad, who was awarded a gold medal for outstanding achievement in agriculture at the recent USP graduation.
“There are many other staff who are also going through various short courses and trainings locally,” Mr Khan said.
“With increasing biosecurity threats, there is great need for BAF to have a strategic training and development plan in place to help the organisation deliver efficient and effective border protection.
“BAF currently has five staff studying overseas in various fields including nematology, plant pathology, biosecurity and veterinary.”
Ms Prasad, BAF’s trade relations officer, said the qualification she received had broadened her knowledge on agricultural issues, pest and diseases, and its impact on the economy.
