Firefighters help company upskill staff members

THE National Fire Authority helped staff of Pernix (Fiji) Limited during a refresher course on firefighting at their Walu Bay station last week.

Pernix (Fiji) Limited safety program manager Michael Fong said the training would help staff members to manage fire hazards in the workplace.

“This training will help us in terms of safety. We take these skill and knowledge and try and eliminate fire hazards in the workplace and these skills we can then take it back into our homes again and avoid home fires,” Mr Fong said.

“This training that we are doing now is two-year refresher course that Pernix undertakes for both our stations. It is a three-day course, it’s a hands-on experience, so after this training our fire crew and the fire wardens will be able to upskill and re-skill their knowledge in terms of firefighting.”

“We have two groups of four and we are using 64mm and 38mm hoses. We will light up a tank containing a lot fuel and a lot of waste material as well. I will command the team and we will extinguish that fire. We have a demo time of seven minutes and we will try and bring that down.”
