A 31-YEAR-OLD Tailevu man appeared in the Nasinu Magistrates Court in Valelevu yesterday for allegedly attacking a 33-year-old Chinese woman in her shop in Kinoya on Monday.
Jiuta Moroca appeared before Magistrates Sophia Hamza charged with one count of act with intent to cause grievous harm and also charged with one count of robbery.
The matter has been transferred to the High Court in Suva.
The court heard he allegedly punched the woman continuously until she fell unconscious.
Ms Hamza was informed by Police prosecutor Constable Joseph Raymond that the accused’s first alleged offence was an indictable one.
Constable Raymond then asked the court if the matter could be transferred to a High Court for that very reason.
In the course of the proceedings Constable Raymond submitted disclosures and also objected to bail.
The court then ordered for the accused, who also lives in Kinoya, to be remanded in custody until he reappears before a High Court in Suva.
When asked by the court in regards to his choice of representation, he chose to seek Legal Aid assistance.
The alleged offences were said to have happened on May 9.
According to police spokesman Inspector Josaia Weicavu said the victim, Lin Li Sheng was recovering in hospital.
Insp Weicavu said they would come down hard on criminals who committed such violent offences, especially on women.
Police investigations continue.
The matter has been adjourned to May 27.
