Young Lomani aims to learn from rugby’s best

YOUNG Frank Lomani wants to learn all he can during his time with the Flying Fijians squad.

From having a taste of professional training with the Vodafone Fiji 7s team and Ben Ryan, he now aims to grasp as much as he could from the Vodafone Flying Fijians senior players and the experience that the side boasts with their overseas-based players in camp.

At 20 years of age, Lomani, originally from Savusavu said, he never dreamt that making the Flying Fijians squad would come so soon.

But when Coach John McKee called to ask him to join the squad in camp, he did not hesitate as he wanted to learn.

“I want to learn as much as I can in this first three days in camp especially when we have players such as Bai (Seremaia), Sunia (Koto) and Ben (Volavola) in the team who can help me,” Lomani said.

The experience gained from being in camp with the Fiji 7s team he said had also taught him a lot about staying humble and being a good listener.

“Being in the sevens squad taught me a lot, I always chat with Ice Katonibau and one thing he kept reminding me was we all start from the bottom before we can make our way up. When I joined the training camp of the 7s team, I started as a water boy, getting the training gear ready and Ice would remind me that patience and humbleness will one day pay-off for me.

“I never dreamt to be in the Flying Fijians squad as a young 20-year-old, I have always watched the Flying Fijians games and I have always told myself that I will one day make this team, but to be in the squad this year is quite fast, I thank God, mum and dad for their upbringing. My family in Samabula, the Marist Rugby Club and my family in the village for their never ending support in my rugby,” he added.

And the young man is also grateful to coach McKee for allowing him to learn from some of the country’s best in the code.
