IT is normal to have fans go crazy when it comes to the national sevens rugby players or rugby players in general. Beachcomber watched with interest the attention bestowed on the players when they arrived at the Nadi International Airport and at the Nausori International Airport after the team’s victory at the world rugby series two weeks ago.
It’s a given that their faces would be recognisable anywhere in Fiji.
So, Beachcomber thought.
While the team was in the VIP Room of the Nausori International Airport, a good crowd gathered to greet the team before they boarded their bus for the celebration at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva.
A young man, fit enough to pass as a rugby player, was however the subject of attention among young girls, ladies and even some men.
Dressed in a white T-shirt with the Fiji Rugby and Vodafone logos, he was hounded by the fans who wanted to have their pictures taken with him.
Beachcomber was quite baffled and realised that the fans mistook him for one of the sevens players. It didn’t help that he sported the hair colour of our national sevens captain.
The young man, of course was blissfully enjoying the attention he was receiving. As the players’ bus went past the crowd, he was all smiles walking home while some who had taken selfies looked in horror realising their “national” error.
