There is no doubt that international teams enjoy their stay in our beloved paradise thanks to our warmth, hospitality, love and endless support.
Ask Chiefs head coach Dave Rennie and he will have a mouthful to tell you about the reception they received in Nausori upon their welcome and throughout their journey to the Capital City.
A massive crowd had gathered at Nausori International Airport to welcome Seta and his team laced with experience. A huge crowd was seen around the Fiji Sports Council premises buying tickets to avoid the last-minute disappointment.
Nobody wants to be left behind! The students of Lelean Memorial School waved banners belonging to the Chiefs franchise and proudly welcomed one of their own.
Chiefs head coach commented that hosting Crusaders for the first time in Fiji was a way of thanking the Pacific Islands for making enormous contributions to Super Rugby.
Players of Fijian, Samoan and Tongan origin have played in Super Rugby and continue to shine for their respective teams.
Many of us at home are fans of NZ Super Rugby teams.
I am a big fan of the Crusaders ever since their golden days when the likes of Loe, MacDonald, Robertson, (current coach) Blackadder, Hammett, Mehrtens, Maxwell, So’oalo, Thorne, Daryl Gibson, Caleb Ralph, Chris Jack, McCaw, Somerville, Carter, Vunibaka, Marshall, Ellis, Berryman, Feek, Delasau, Read and Aaron Mauger ruled Super Rugby. Their record three in a row victory under Robbie Deans from 1998-2000 remains a dream for Super Rugby teams.
Crusaders also boast three winners of the IRB International Player of the Year Award: Carter (2005, 2012 and 2015), Read (2013) and McCaw (2006, 2009 and 2010). McNicholl, Whitelock, Dagg, Taylor, Fonotia, Franks, Moody, Romanu, Taufua, Todd, Macilai, Crockett, Fruean, McKenzie, Mo’unga, Nadolo and Volavola have been instrumental for Crusaders lately. As I conclude, I wish our hockey teams the very best in their bid to win the World Hockey League competition and now that Fiji is poised to play USA, Argentina and Brazil in pool play in Rio, expect preparations to be intense as Fiji aims for gold.
