The report of 12 homeless families with no roof over their heads, after being evicted from Buca settlement in Savusavu is really sad to read (FT 29/6).
To add to their pain, Commissioner North Jovesa Vocea said Government could not do anything about the issue because it was private land and the owner had legal powers to remove the tenants from it.
I am sure that the current FijiFirst Government, who loves to put Fijians first, will find land or homes where these families could be relocated to start a new lease on life.
My younger brother who is also a church pastor is married to a beautiful lady from Buca, and I am sure the landowners there could allocate a piece of their land for the families to rent.
On the other hand, while Fijians should be reminded not to live in settlements illegally as squatters, those who live on leased land for years should be ready to vacate when their lease expires.
It is becoming a norm for those with expired leases to refuse to vacate and when removed, calls on the press and Government for help.
