Village awaits housing assistance

A VILLAGE in the Dawasamu district of Tailevu is still awaiting Government’s promised housing material assistance.

Driti villager Joeli Cola, 34, said Government had promised assistance in building 50 houses but had yet to deliver on its word.

The villagers of Driti had been adviced by government officials to relocate to higher grounds where they would be sheltered during natural disasters.

Mr Driti said they had begun construction on some homes in locations on higher ground, a few kilometres from their village site.

He said Government had told them they would assist by building 50 houses, but the villagers had opted not to wait for assistance.

During an interview, Mr Cola told this newspaper they had not received any word from the Government in regards to the promised housing material.
