As you are reading this, the dust at Lawaqa Park could still be stormy because of the ferocious battles that would be in action and students, parents, friends and old scholars alike will be adding to the supercharged atmosphere that would be likened to a fusion of atoms compressed together to form a star.
But the question that should be lingering in our minds is where do these boys go to from here?
I have written in this forum before that the major unions should use these games to scout for new talent. For instance Nadroga is working with Cuvu College and Nadi with Ratu Navula, so why don’t Lautoka work with Natabua and St Thomas, and Suva and Namosi can work with schools such as Grammar, Ratu Sukuna, Nasinu, Marist, John Wesley.
Tailevu and Northland can have their choices from Lelean, Sila, QVS and RKS.
What they do is bring the core of those teams to train with them and slowly introduce them into the system, so that come the RWC 2023 we can have a team comprised mostly of home-bred players who have come up through the ranks. If you compare the crowd in a Deans final to one of our Flying Fijians team games at the ANZ Stadium, I’m sure you will all get my drift.
Food for thought don’t you think?
Anyways good luck to all teams participating in Lawaqa Park and please remember, at the end of the day rugby always wins and to our athletes in Rio — go Fiji, go!
