Coach relies on team bonding

IT’S not that their mobile phones have been confiscated but coach Chris Cracknell believes his team is very professional and focused.

As athletes rush to get selfies with famous athletes, the national women’s 7s team is relaxed and are not “beside themselves to get one”.

“They walked around and one said look that’s Serena Williams but they were not rushing over to get selfies.

“We asked them to be professional, focused and that’s what they have done. It shows how far they have come.

“During meals, we go together as a group and get our meals. We sat around for a good hour and a half just chatting away. All these people were running for selfies, but the girls just said it was great.

“They know they have all the time to do that after their games. If we win a medal they can eat as much McDonald’s as they would like, eat at the canteen.

“I couldn’t care less, they deserve to let their hair down after the game.”

The girls’ phones were confiscated on Tuesday. However, every Olympian at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games receives a S7 from Samsung.

“It’s refreshing in this day and age when people are always on their phones, but they can take selfies after their games.

“The girls know why they are here, some of them missed out on the last world cup and this is their last shot.

“They can be the first team to win a medal for Fiji. We noticed while chatting during dinner that some teams were not communicating because they were on their phones the whole time,” Cracknell said.

The players had their day off on Thursday (Brazilian time) but Cracknell still imposed a strict rule on having meals together.

Some of the girls treated themselves to haircuts. They were also asked to relax, chill out and stay out of the sun.

But what has been “distracting” for the team is forward Tima Tamoi’s enthusiasm to collect Olympic pins.

“That’s only distraction and she has been doing very well,” Cracknell says.
