Emotional day as 1599 students graduate

HUNDREDS of family members and friends from all walks of life gathered at the Vodafone Arena in Suva to mark the University of the South Pacific’s graduation ceremony yesterday.

Anaseini Civonitokalau Tera Conicanua was among the graduates with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

“I struggled for six years trying to balance my time between studies and my seven children,” Ms Conicanua said.

“But today I am emotional and proud at the same time for accomplishing my dream, no matter how long it took.

“Today I pay tribute to my mentors and inspiration, my late mother and father and I know I have made them proud today.”

The 46-year-old from Dravo, Bau, Tailevu, acknowledged her children, her family and friends from Jasper Williams Primary School for their continued love, care and support.

Kiribati national Terenga Maimoanga, who also graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, said it was only possible through a scholarship funded by Australia.

“I am so happy that I got to complete my degree and go back to Kiribati and work and provide for my family,” Ms Maimoanga said.

“I will never stop learning and if I am eligible for another scholarship next year I will definitely return to do post-graduate studies.

“Family is the first and most important support system for anything that you set out to achieve.

“I am grateful that my family were able to be here with me to witness this achievement.”
