Bati targets

TWO of Fiji’s enterprising 7s rugby union players could be part of the Vodafone Fiji Bati to the Rugby League World Cup in Australia next year.

High flying Jarryd Hayne and Amenoni Nasilasila have been eyed by the Fiji National Rugby League for the world tourney.

Nasilasila’s break could be at the Fiji Bati Test against Samoa in Apia next month.

FNRL chief executive officer Timoci Naleba said Hayne had declared his availability to play for Fiji in the RLWC.

“Jarryd is confirmed for the Fiji Bati in the Rugby League World Cup. He won’t be able to travel to Samoa for the Test match because of commitments, but has expressed his interest to be part of the buildup to the Rugby League World Cup,” Naleba said.

He said having someone of Hayne’s calibre in the Fiji Bati would bring a plethora of experience for head coach Mick Potter to choose from.

“He brings with him a lot of experience and enthusiasm and with young players we need balance in the team, he will be a good leader,” Naleba said.

Naleba said there were also others in the mix who would be up for the role of captaincy such as the Sims brothers, but it was good to allow Potter to have a range of players to pick from.

Meanwhile, Nasilasila could also see himself in the RLWC if he builds on what he has showcased in his past two games with Namatakula Raiders.

Despite his side missing out on the semi-finals after they lost last weekend, Vodafone Fiji Bati assistant coach Josaia Rabele said the door of selection into the Fiji Bati for the RLWC was still open.

“The opportunity is there and the selection doors are still open. If we can draft him into the team to either play in the game against Australian Affiliates and Samoa for Mick Potter to have a look at him, that would be good,” Rabele said.

“We’re looking for a connection of five-eighth and scrum half and also a hooker, so his chances are very high if he continues to do well,” Rabele said.

“That’s what we’re looking for. We have potential players and if we have disciplined players, they will be included in the squad.”

The last RLWC had Aaron Groom who has been out of rugby league for some time now because of sickness and Alipate Tani playing the positions.
