Maharaj questions Rabuka’s motives

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has neither written officially nor approached the Opposition Leader of the Government’s plan to amend the 2013 Constitution.

Opposition Independent MP Alvick Maharaj told Parliament yesterday the Government needs to be clear on the changes it intended to make.

“For the first time, through the media, we hear what we expect to change in the Constitution,” Mr Maharaj told Parliament.

“I ask where the bipartisanship is when on one side we hear from media outlets and on the other we, as Opposition members, are expected to support the move.”

Mr Maharaj referred to Chapter 11 which he claimed had been reported by the media.

“But what in Chapter 11 needs to be changed, is still anyone’s guess.

“While we assume it is the requirement of how to change the Constitution, we are not informed officially what this government intends to change.”

Mr Maharaj accused the Government of being afraid to say publicly what exactly it intended to amend in the Constitution.

“Is this Government afraid to say publicly that they want to take away all freehold lands, Fijian nationality, equal citizenry, secularised state?

“Say it openly, what you want to change in the 2013 Constitution.

“When you are not clear, it leads to conspiracy theories. And conspiracy theories help no one.

“This used to happen during the previous administration, and it continues to happen now.”

Mr Maharaj said when the Government did not come up with clear messages, people would make up theories.

“We heard so much about bipartisanship, about changing the Constitution, but till today the honourable Prime Minister has neither written officially nor approached the Leader of Opposition on what their plan is about in the change of the Constitution.”
