Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has criticised Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew for his recent remarks that suggested some police officers were corrupt.
In a strongly worded response to questions by the media at an event yesterday, the PM expressed disappointment over the comments, describing them as damaging to the morale of the police force.
“If he (Juki Fong) has proof that they are dirty, they should have been investigated and arrested,” Mr Rabuka said.
“No point just casting out a blanket, a big net like that. It demoralises the whole force, when you think you know that there are a few (dirty cops), but then you say the police is infested. That’s very bad.”
Mr Rabuka further stated that such comments undermine the integrity of the police force and sent the wrong message to both officers and the public.
“We have a new commissioner coming in, and he will tell you that,” Mr Rabuka said.
New Police Commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu, will assume office on February 3, 2025.
