Christians mark Holy Thursday with washing of the feet

As Christians mark Holy Thursday, one of the most powerful moments of the Easter season is re-enacted in churches around the world – the washing of the feet.

This tradition, rooted in the Gospel of John (John 13: 1–17), recalls the night Jesus humbled Himself to wash the feet of His disciples – a task usually reserved for servants.

In that moment, Jesus showed that true leadership lies in service.

As their teacher and Lord, He knelt before them, teaching that greatness comes not through power, but through humility.

The act wasn’t just symbolic. It was a command.

“I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you,” Jesus told His followers, as to live with compassion, serve with love, and put others first.

Holy Thursday also marks the beginning of Easter, leading into Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The washing of feet foreshadows the ultimate sacrifice Jesus would make – giving His life for others.

Yesterday, priests and church leaders continued this tradition, washing the feet of parishioners – a quiet act that speaks powerfully of love, service, and faith.
