Weather watch: Heavy rain alert

RAIN will become frequent in the northern and eastern parts of Fiji from today.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said a heavy rain alert is in place for Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, Lau Group, Lomaiviti, and the eastern half of Viti Levu.

“An active trough of low pressure with associated cloud and rain lies just to the north of Fiji,” the weather office said.

“It is expected to gradually drift southwards towards Fiji and affect the northern and eastern parts of the group from tomorrow (today),” said FMS.

“This system is expected to gradually drift southwards towards Fiji and affect the northern and eastern parts of the group from tomorrow.”

Vanua Levu, Taveuni, Kadavu, Lau grou, Lomaiviti group and the Eastern half of Viti Levu will have cloudy periods with some showers and isolated thunderstorms. Showers will increase to rain from today, said FMS.

The weatherman had earlier said if the low pressure system intensified, Fijians should expect heavy rain across the country that would result in flash flooding and flooding of major rivers.
