The Fiji Roads Authority has yet to pay $1.8 million to former Department of National Roads staff members who were made redundant in 2012, revealed the 2018-2019 Audit Report on Statutory Authorities that was tabled in Parliament last week.

“We noted that the authority did not maintain a complete list of staff which makes up the total balance of the redundancy liability account amounting to $1,803,399.

“The authority was unable to obtain details of redundancy liability account from the Department of National Roads (DNR) in 2012 when the authority was established,” stated the OAG report.

The FRA informed the auditor-general that redundancy payment to municipal council workers and staff working in outer islands under the memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Rural Maritime and Development were yet to be paid.

The OAG was also informed there were some cases in arbitration brought up by former staff of DNR which was related to their redundancy payment.

“If the decision is in favour of the staff, then FRA uses this fund to pay for that,” the OAG report said.

The auditor-general recommended the authority identify former staff members to whom redundancy payment should be made and maintain an updated listing.
